Juneteenth Talk

Fellow LA-based alum, Valerie Richards '82, '90, will talk about the historical importance of Juneteenth (June 19) - the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Valerie will also share poetry and stories about how this historic event is celebrated today. Below, you can find Valerie's biography and a reading list you may be interested in as pre- or post-work for this talk.

Speaker

Valerie Richards '82, '90, '04

Valerie received her Bachelor of Arts in Afro-American Studies and Government from Smith in 1982, subsequently received her Masters of Social Work at Smith in 1990, and in 2004 completed Smith's School for Social Work Certificate Program in End of Life Care. Valerie has practiced social work with children, adolescents, and families. She has taught at schools of social work including U.S.C., Smith SSW, and Catholic University. In the last several years, Valerie has been working with older adults.
