About this Event

Smith College Club of Los Angeles presents the “Ask a Scientist” panel on COVID-19. We have invited three Smithie scientists, two epidemiologists and one microbiologist, to join us and speak directly to the questions Los Angeles Smithies have. Do you want to know more about COVID-19 variants and mutations? Or maybe you want to further understand what herd immunity means when it comes to COVID-19? Or maybe you just want to know how to cut through the noise of all the information we get daily, to understand what is really important?

When registering, please submit questions you are interested in having answered. Our moderator will be distilling all the submissions we get to make sure panel content is catered to all our guests and their concerns. We look forward to seeing you!

The Panelists

Anne Seifert, M.P.H., Ph.D. ‘65 Graduate Program

Dr. Anne Seifert is an epidemiologist, author, and speaker. She holds an M.A. in experimental psychology from Smith College and a Ph.D. in epidemiology from the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Anne has focused on public health most of her career conducting research at the Harvard School of Public Health in nutrition and Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons in population studies.

After settling in California, she worked in San Francisco evaluating ongoing health programs for the Bay Area Comprehensive Planning Council. As a manager for the County of Marin Department of Health Services she gathered and reported medically relevant statistics to county and state agencies.

Her work in epidemiology reached a turning point after she became Co-Investigator of a National Institutes of Health study of how healthy people stay healthy. Since then, for over 30 years, she has focused on the prevention of chronic disease. Her writings offer blueprints for adopting good lifestyle habits including weight control. Her recent book, “Dr.Anne Good Health at Hand” is the culmination in short form of those research findings.

She has appeared as a guest on national radio “Coast to Coast” with George Noory to discuss issues surrounding the COVID 19 pandemic. She considers herself a researcher at heart, driven by curiosity, and a public health advocate for disease prevention and social well-being.

Meg L. Flanagan, Ph.D. ‘96

Dr. Flanagan is an experimental life scientist by training who spent ten years working in molecular biology, antibody engineering, and virology laboratories prior to beginning her career in science policy. She was awarded a Science and Technology (S&T) Policy Fellowship by the American Association for the Advancement of Science and has authored and co-authored several peer-reviewed research articles, a chapter for the Methods in Molecular Biology series, and science policy pieces. Currently, Dr. Flanagan serves at the U.S. Department of State, where she works with interagency and foreign counterparts to pursue shared S&T priorities, especially open science and data sharing; contributes to national science policy development; and lends scientific and multilateral expertise to U.S. delegations at fora including the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, Biological Weapons Convention, UN Commission on Science and Technology for Development, UNGA, and World Health Assembly. She earned an undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences from Smith College and a Ph.D. in Pathobiology from the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California.

Recinda Sherman, Ph.D '92

Recinda is the Program Manager of Data Use & Research for the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR). She is also an adjunct professor in the School of Community & Global Health at Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, CA. Recinda received her undergraduate degree from Smith in Biology with a minor in Public Policy, her MPH in Biostatistics and Epidemiology from Oregon Health & Sciences University, and her PhD in Epidemiology from University of Miami.
