About SCCLA

Welcome to the Smith College Club of Los Angeles (SCCLA)! We are a diverse and active group and a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. We cover an area that is as large as Rhode Island and Massachusetts, with more than 700 LA-area alumnae.

  • We organize activities throughout the LA area, from the San Fernando Valley to the South Bay, host various events to bring local alumnae and/or prospective students together, and initiate annual fundraising for the club's Scholarship Fund.
  • The mission of the Smith College Club of Los Angeles is to develop, maintain and strengthen the connection between all Smith alumnae in our area.
  • The goal is to enhance the prestige of Smith College and to increase the recognition that this educational experience is of superior benefit to women.

    Major Activities
    • Alumnae Admissions (recruiting new students; "student raising")

The Club is very active in recruiting. Fifty-eight students from our area are currently at Smith (44 studying on campus, 14 studying off-campus). Approximately 60 alumnae assist with college fairs, visits to high schools, interviews, book award presentations, hosting parties for prospective students, and other activities to support admissions efforts.

    • Endowed Scholarship Fund

The SCCLA Endowed Scholarship Fund, established and supported by area alumnae, provides scholarships to students from the LA area each year. Donations to the College from SCCLA have averaged $5,000 annually for the past several years. The annual Theatre Ticket Series and periodic benefits are the major methods by which SCCLA enhances this endowment fund. Additional funds come through directory advertising and contributions.

    • Book Awards

Smith College Book Awards honor academic and personal excellence for high school students in their junior year in the Los Angeles area. Not only does this program help identify the brightest of local high school students, but it also serves to make Smith better known to qualified candidates, their families, and communities.

    Board of Directors Positions

Elections to board positions, normally for two-year terms, are held annually at the end of the Club's fiscal year in June. The Club President may make appointments to fill vacancies throughout the year. To encourage Club members to be active on the Board, monthly meetings are scheduled on weekends, and e-mail is used to facilitate communication.
